Derek: Thank you so much guys for watching tonight, or today, it depends where you are in the world. We’ll do this interview in Spanish because we are with Nicola Cruz who is from Ecuador and we are in Argentina so, let’s do this interview in Spanish. It was a very difficult show to produce and I think for Nicola it was very difficult as well.I think this show was very difficult to do this show, how do you feel, how was your experience here in Iguazu?

Nicola: Wow, I think this is the most impressive location where I ever played at.The best audience (laughs) !The audience... is nature!

Derek: Big audience yeah. Did nature today change something today when you were playing?

Nicola: Exactly, the idea for this set was to make it interactive with the location, to make the most of this very special place. This all sums up with the fact that we are under 35 celsius degrees, or more, and the equipment is burning. But I don’t know, I think this is the «mantra» of hotness that took me here today. Creating. But everything worked fine?

Derek: Yes, everything worked fine. This set was very organic, right?

Nicola: Yes, and a lot of new music that I recently was producing. So I really think it was the perfect place to launch these new ideas...

Derek: Guys, you can ask any question for Nicola, we are live on Facebook. So you can...I will chose some questions and ask them to Nicola.(Mic problem) Sorry...So, I got some questions for you. I saw that you were very involved in what happened and is currently happening in Amazonia and in the whole world right now.You published a lot of messages on your socials, on Facebook etc.
How can you get more involved as an artist?

Nicola: So, you start playing and getting a bigger and bigger audience, so I always thought that the message that you have is important and every time more and more important. I think we are all involved, and not only me. I think now it’s time to take a stand in some way, radical. Not only saying «this is happening», that’s not enough. We saw it and I think the best example is and I realized this this year, with Amazonia burning, which has been very impactful for me. I think I tried to keep my music separated from a political message, but music is always political and there is nothing to do with it. So yeah, trying to find a path for all that and keep it going with a positive message of consciousness.

Derek: Do you think that art must be engaged?

Nicola: Yes, without a doubt. And I think that personally, this is something that grew in me.We could all say: «I don’t care what’s happening in the world right now». It’s very easy. But when you have a message and through art, what’s best to spread this message.

Derek: I hope that you playing here in Iguazu was sort of a message. And I hope people took it that way. Just one important thing, there was no sound here. The sound was in Nicola’s headphones only so there’s no impact for wildlife, for sure. What’s your relationship with Argentina? If you have some.

Nicola: I think I don’t really have a relationship, except it’s a brother country from South America.I have a lot of friends here. Also, a label where you released some of your albums right? (Laughs)

Nicola: Oh yeah, small detail. I was thinking of another thing. Yes, the headquarters of ZZK, where I released my two albums. It’s been the perfect label for me, for these two albums, because it’s a label which is in the continent. They made a great effort to help South American / Latin American music.

Derek: Last album «SIKU», which is a flute from Andean, right?

Nicola: Yes.

Derek: You released a «rework» version of this album, not so long ago. For me, a more «club» version, why did you want to do that?

Nicola: Actually, I invited some people, some producers that I really admire. And I let them complete freedom to make what they want. I often like that the rework version is an «anti» version of the original one, so maybe because of that. But I think that the personality from every artist is captured in every reworked track.

Derek: How did you chose the artist for this album?

Nicola: I think I bumped into them all around the world, there are old friends from school, as well one friend from Argentina: Hermetics, work that I loved, and let’s go.

Derek: We were speaking about SIKU, if you ever had to chose one instrument to play, what would it be?In general?

Nicola: I think today, it would be a clarinet maybe. I don’t play it, but... I would try!

Derek: Now I’m looking at the online audience. A lot of questions! Question from Luciano Martinez, did you feel the energy from the place?

Nicola: Impossible not to feel the energy of this place. For sure.

Derek: Question from Juan Pablo: whats synths do you use? Here is a modular synth, you can chose the modules you want. It’s hybrid. You use different modules. Here is the Octatrack, for the samples. A delay pedal here, actually I travel pretty light.

Derek: OK. A very Argentinian question, what’s your favorite football team?

Nicola: Independiente I think! One question from a woman maybe?

Derek: From a woman? Yes, where are the women?

Nicola: Yees!

Derek: Question from Lucia: wasn’t it too difficult to play with the sound of the falls?

Nicola: Lucia, what we did is using headphones because we can’t use sound here because of the environmental impact, so it wasn’t so difficult... this part!

Derek: Question from Nayel: do you produce or plan a project with Nicolas Jaar?

Nicola: No, actually it was an old collaboration, we collaborated just a little bit and it was brief.

Derek: I saw you playing at Peacock, I told you this yesterday, with a very nice AV set, why was is so important for you to put the video? And which artist are you working with for the visuals?

Nicola: Good question. I always travel with Fidel Eljuri, he makes all the visual aspect of the project, I think he’s always been an visual artist for a long time, and we play together a lot, and I think we can see the evolution of how he translates everything I play, and he has his own freedom to create whatever he wants. It’s this kind of relationship where we don’t always speak and it happens.

Derek: It’s very interesting. It’s very beautiful.Thank you. Last question: what’s your favorite location in our beautiful Earth?

Nicola: This year I knew a very nice location in Japan, a mountain called Naeba, it’s where they do the festival Fuji Rock, not Mount Fuji, very nice, with some very nice landscapes. Japon is beautiful in general.

Derek: Good. I hope that some day we’ll go with Cercle.I’m sure.Thank you very much for this performance. We are very honored to be there.Thank you guys for watching and liking and everything. We got a tradition, it’s the mystery box, it’s a little gift. Maybe.. here. It’s a very Argentinian little gift. I don’t know if you like Mate?

Nicola: Iguazu Mate.Very good. I don’t have this at home, so it’s perfect.I love tea so I think I will start with this like in Argentina.

Derek: Thank you very much to you, and the whole team, who worked a lot for this show.Thank you guys, see you next time.
