Doosan Lee Seung-yeop experienced fall baseball What are the points of improvement for next year’s leap forward?
Finished in 5th place in the regular season
Emphasis on aggressive baseball and bullpen pitcher management for next season after the season ends in the wild card game
The Doosan Bears ended the 2023 season by being eliminated from the postseason. Doosan coach Lee Seung-yeop talked about improvement points for a leap forward in the next season.
Doosan lost 9-14 to NC Dinos in the first game of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO postseason wild card (WC) decision held at NC Park in Changwon on the 19th.
Doosan, ranked 5th in the regular season, had to win both the first and second games of the wild card decision to advance to the semi-playoffs (semi-PO, 3 wins out of 5), but suffered a loss from the first game and was confirmed to be eliminated from the postseason.
Coach Lee, who became the official manager for the first time this year and led Doosan, experienced a bitter loss in the postseason. However, last year, the team, which suffered the humiliation of finishing in 9th place for the first time since its founding, was reorganized and led to fall baseball.
The growth of promising players such as Choi Seung-yong and Kim Dong-ju is also a great achievement. Choi Seung-yong, who showed impressive pitching between starting and bullpen, achieved excellent results with 3 wins, 6 losses, 1 save, and an ERA of 3.97 in 34 games. Kim Dong-ju appeared in 18 games and recorded 3 wins, 6 losses, and an ERA of 4.14, proving his competitiveness as a starting pitcher.
The commander did not hide his expectations. Coach Lee said, “Choi Seung-yong threw a good ball at the end of the season. “I think young pitchers such as Choi Seung-yong and Kim Dong-ju will get better next year,” he noted.
Doosan, a traditional powerhouse, cannot be satisfied with advancing to fall baseball. Aiming for even greater heights next season.
Coach Lee said, “Looking back on this season, we showed a lot of weaknesses in the batting lineup. They were at the bottom in terms of scoring power, including team batting average and team RBI. This led to a difficult year for pitchers. He was under pressure and felt that if he conceded a goal first, he would lose. “It was a season with high physical and mental fatigue,” he said. “We must first think about how we can play aggressive baseball next season.”
This year, Doosan's sure-to-win team Kim Myung-shin (79 innings) and Jeong Cheol-won (72⅔ innings) pitched in 70 and 67 games, respectively, and pitched a fight, pitching more than 70 innings. We plan to ease their physical burden in the 2024 season.
Coach Lee said, “Reliable Jeong Cheol-won and Kim Myung-shin pitched many innings. Next year, we will try to spread it out rather than placing a high emphasis on specific players. “I will prepare well during camp so that the bullpen pitchers are not overloaded,” he said emphatically.
