Will Korea's table tennis and soccer team celebrate victory in Qatar ahead of the Asian Cup?
WTT Contender Doha 2024 opens in Doha on January 14th
While the national soccer team is attempting to reach the Asian Cup title for the first time in 64 years in Qatar, the national table tennis team is aiming for victory at the same venue.
The 'World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Doha 2024' (total prize money of $80,000) will be held at the Lusail Sports Arena in Doha, Qatar from January 14 to 20 next year. The competition period overlaps with the Asian Football Cup hosting period.
In the men's singles, world No. 10 Woojin Jang, Jong-Hoon Lim (Korea Exchange), Sang-Soo Lee (Samsung Life Insurance), and Jae-Hyeon Ahn (Korea Exchange) will participate. In the women's singles, Shin Yu-bin (Korean Air), Joo Cheon-hee (Samsung Life Insurance), Jeon Ji-hee (Mirae Asset Securities), and Lee Si-on (Samsung Life Insurance) will participate.
Shin Yu-bin was given the top seed as she had the highest world ranking among the women's singles players in this tournament. Shin Yu-bin, who won the women's singles at the WTT contender level Lagos and Lima tournaments last year, is aiming to win this tournament as well.
Attention is being paid to whether the national table tennis team, including Shin Yu-bin, can boost the morale of her soccer team by scoring a victory in Qatar.
The national soccer team led by coach Jürgen Klinsmann was in Group E along with Malaysia, Jordan, and Bahrain in the group stage of the Asian Cup. The match against Bahrain will be held on January 15th, the match against Jordan will be held on the 20th, and the match against Malaysia will be held on the 25th. The national soccer team is attempting to win the championship for the first time in 64 years since 1960.
