High School Student Yoon Ji-hwan Fails to Advance to World Aquatics Men's 50m Backstroke Finals

Yoon Ji-hwan (18, Gangwon Physical Education High School), the youngest among the Korean male swimmers who participated in the 2024 International Aquatics Federation World Championships in Doha, Qatar, failed to advance to the final stage.

Ji-hwan Yoon finished in 25.14 seconds in the men's 50m backstroke semifinals at the competition held at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar on the 18th (Korean time) and ranked 16th out of 16 participants.

As a result, they were unable to obtain a ticket to the finals given to the top 8 players.

He qualified for the Doha Games by setting a personal best of 24.96 seconds in this event at the national team selection event held in November last year, and placed 9th with 25.01 seconds in the preliminaries held on the 17th and advanced to the semifinals.

It has been seven years since Won Young-jun in 2017 that a Korean male athlete passed the preliminaries in the 50m backstroke at the World Championships.

However, Ji-hwan Yoon performed in the finals, falling short of his record set during the preliminaries.

The Korean record for this event is 24.93 seconds, and Ole Braunschweig (Germany), who placed 8th in the semifinals and advanced to the final, recorded 24.74 seconds.
