On March 3rd at 8:50 PM Korean time, we take a leap forward towards our second consecutive victory in Glasgow.

‘Smile Jumper’ Woo Sang-hyuk (27, Yongin City Hall) is attempting to win the men’s high jump title at the World Indoor Athletics Championships for the third time in a row.

The organizing committee of the 2024 Glasgow World Indoor Athletics Championships released the final entries for the competition on the 26th (Korean time).

This tournament will be held from March 1st to 3rd local time at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, England.

561 athletes from 133 countries will compete in 18 sports.

There is only one athlete competing from Korea, Woo Sang-hyuk of the men's high jump.

Although he feels a little lonely, Woo Sang-hyuk will participate in the Glasgow competition wearing the armband of the 'defending champion' and being welcomed by the organizers.

Woo Sang-hyuk won the gold medal in the first major competition in Korean track and field history by exceeding 2m34 at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in March 2022.

He is considered the strongest candidate to win the Glasgow competition.

A total of 13 athletes, including Woo Sang-hyuk, will participate in the men's high jump finals, which will begin at 8:50 pm on March 3rd Korean time.

Current top jumper Mutaz Essa Barsim (Qatar) and 2023 Outdoor World Championship champion Gianmarco Tamberg (Italy) will not participate in this competition.

The first person to threaten Woo Sang-hyuk in Glasgow is Shelby McEwan (USA).

McEwan won the indoor high jump competition in Justopece, Czech Republic, beating Sanghyuk Woo on the 11th.

At the time, McEwan and Woo Sang-hyuk's final record was 2m33, and the success time of 2m33 was also the same in the third period.

However, the rankings were divided as Woo Sang-hyuk succeeded in hitting 2m31 in the second period and McEwan succeeded in the first period.

In Justopeche, Woo Sang-hyuk focused on records rather than rankings, such as succeeding at 2m33 and then raising the bar to 2m37 to challenge the Korean record.

The results may be different at the Glasgow World Indoor Championships, where there is a battle for rankings.

In addition to McEwan, Hamish Kerr (New Zealand) and Andriy Protsenko (Ukraine) are classified as challengers who will face Woo Sang-hyuk.

Among the 13 athletes participating in the men's high jump, Woo Sang-hyuk ranks third in the personal best record (2m 36).

Protsenko (2m 40) and Donald Thomas (2m 37, Bahamas) have higher personal records than Woo Sang-hyuk.

However, the jumper with the best momentum recently is Woo Sang-hyuk.

Sanghyuk Woo took second place at the 2022 Outdoor World Championships and won the Diamond Final in 2023, and tied for first place in the world in the record category again this year with 2m33.

He won the Banska Bystrica Indoor Championships in Slovakia (2m32) on February 14th and the Nechvizdy Indoor Championships in Czech Republic (2m30) on the 21st, and also performed well in mock exams for the World Indoor Championships.

If Woo Sang-hyuk reaches the top in Glasgow, he will become the third male jumper to win two consecutive World Indoor Championships, following Javier Sotomayor (Cuba) and Stefan Holm (Sweden), who hold the men's high jump world record (2m 45).

Sotomayor won back-to-back titles in Toronto in 1993 and Barcelona in 1995, while Holm won three times in a row in Lisbon in 2001, Birmingham in 2003, and Budapest in 2004.

Woo Sang-hyuk takes a leap toward his second consecutive victory at the Men's High Jump World Indoor Championships, something he has not done since Holm, whom he calls his 'idol.'

At the Glasgow World Indoor Championships, world-class track and field athletes such as men's pole vaulter Armand Duplantis (Sweden) and 60m Noah Lyles, shot putter Ryan Krauser (USA), women's 400m Femki Ball (Netherlands), and pole vaulter Katie Moon (USA) Many stars will participate.
